Teeth Whitening
Teeth Whitening is offered as a professional at home procedure. The result is usually as good as in-office whitening. There seems to be a reduced incidence of sensitivity. Many times in-office must be followed by at-home procedures. The result can never be guaranteed with either technique. Yellow teeth whiten quicker and better than gray teeth. The cost for in-office is usually 3 to 4 times that for at-home whitening. Annually from March 1 to June 30, the office participates in the crown council “Smiles for Life” program where whitening is offered at a reduced fee in a program to raise money for children's charities.
Do you have teeth that are discolored, stained or have lighter "spots" on them? You may be a candidate for tooth whitening. As you know many products can be purchased at the drug store or over the TV by the latest infomercials. However, it has been found that these products can be the cause of many problems and may lead to severe gum problems if they are not stopped in time.
A number of factors contribute to discoloration of teeth. Among them are:
| Tetracycline use |
Excessive fluoride |
| Trauma (injury) to the teeth |
Pulp (nerve) degeneration |
| Restorative fillings |
Genetic and acquired illnesses |
| Aging |
Use of coffee, tea, and tobacco |
There are two major types of tooth whitening systems that may be used. Internal bleaching is done in the dental office and is often used when only one or two teeth are involved. External bleaching is conducted by the patient at home under the strict supervision of the dental staff. A special tray is made in the laboratory and the patient has the responsibility of wearing it for a given number of hours each day. The person must also come in weekly to check the progress and the conditions of his gums. To maintain the desired degree of whiteness, the procedure may require a "touch-up" visit about once a year. Those patients in our practice who have undergone this whitening procedure have acquired not only a more pleasing smile, but have experienced higher self-esteem and self confidence. After all, we all feel better when we know we look our best and a bright smile surely boosts our confidence when out in public.
Whitening Toothpastes – These may remove stains, but I recommend them only to maintain what has been achieved with professional at-home whitening. There are many products on the market. I believe ClosysII does as well as any product.
